Alex Trebek Made An Unforgettable Cameo On ‘Pepper Ann,’ Which Is Finally Coming To Disney+

Beloved Saturday morning cartoon Pepper Ann is coming to Disney Plus on September 8. The series, created by Sue Rose, ran from 1997-2000 within ABC’s One Saturday Morning block of shows. Since then, it’s been in reruns on the Disney Channel and Toon Disney, but unlike other animated series from that block, including Doug and Recess, Pepper Ann hasn’t been available on the streaming platform — until now.

The series centered around 12-year-old Pepper Ann Pearson, who was voiced by Kathleen Wilhoite. Pepper Ann and her younger sister Moose, voiced by Pamela Adlon, were brought up by their single mother, Lydia (April Winchell). The show focuses on Pepper Ann and her friends dealing with typical pre-teen mischief, getting in trouble with their principal (played by Maxwell Smart himself, Don Adams, in his final role before he died) and, perhaps owing to the fact that the series is the first animated Disney show to be helmed by a woman, it has a serious feminist bent. Lydia Pearson was a proud single mom who didn’t need a man around… until she found her dream man in Alex Trebek.

Appearing as himself in the finale episode, Trebek marries Lydia, becoming Pepper Ann’s stepfather. The Jeopardy! host, who passed away in 2020, was no stranger to guest appearances on TV shows from Cheers to The Simpsons to Orange Is the New Black, and often poked fun at his persona. On Pepper Ann, the episode in which he appears is set 15 years in the future, and, upon returning to her childhood home, Pepper Ann is greeted at the door by her mom and her new husband, Trebek. Trebek is not the only celebrity to appear in the show, over its five seasons, Mark Hamill and Evel Knievel also played themselves, and actors like Luke Perry, Brittany Murphy, and John O’Hurley also lent their voices to the show.

Pepper Ann‘s first three seasons will drop on Disney+ on September 8, while seasons 4 and 5’s premiere dates on the streamer have yet to be announced.
