Rysen John, Quincy Wilson put on IR as Giants trim roster down to 80

Tight end Rysen John and safety Quincy Wilson, who both suffered ankle injuries after making plays this summer, were placed on injured reserve as the Giants made a series of moves Tuesday to reach the NFL-mandated 80 player roster maximum.

John and Wilson cannot play for the Giants again this season unless they first receive an injury settlement and get released. They are free to play elsewhere if released. The Giants have put six players on IR during training camp.

The Giants cut long snapper Carson Tinker — who lost a battle to returning starter Casey Kreiter — and waived cornerback Montre Hartage (shoulder) and tight end Cole Hikutini (hip) with injury designations.

Like Tae Crowder who forced a fumble and went on IR last week, Wilson is sidelined days after making an interception in a preseason game.

John was tied for the team lead with six catches in preseason games.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick said Tuesday he expects Cam Newton to return to the field this week for the second day of joint practices with the Giants after the quarterback missed a second day of practice because of a misunderstanding of COVID-19 testing rules

Newton is under an NFL-mandated five-day reentry process for unvaccinated players after traveling to a team-approved, out-of-town medical appointment over the weekend.
